First, there’s Eugene Sledge, whose book With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa had me on the edge of my seat with every page turn. Then there’s Samuel Hynes, whose Flights of Passage gave me a glimpse into the life of a pilot during WWII. And lastly, we have William Wharton, whose Crossing the Line left me in awe of his bravery as a Navy sailor.
I have to say, this collection from The Library of America truly brings these memoirs to life. I was completely immersed in each story and felt like I was right there with these soldiers as they fought for their country. The way each author writes is so raw and honest, it really makes you feel like you’re part of their experience. I couldn’t put it down!
